Criada pelo artista Daniel Lima, HARLEM: CULTURAL CAPITAL é um projeto de construção audiovisual que equaciona intervenção urbana, vídeo, música e performance. O projeto HARLEM: CULTURAL CAPITAL tem como centro a investigação-ação sobre gentrificação do bairro do Harlem em Nova York e o racismo policial nos riots de Baltimore. Com a participação de Eugênio Lima, Felipe Teixeira, Fernando Coster Roberta Estrela D'Alva e Élida Lima, o projeto previu a realização de um processo de investigação-ação na cidade de NY e posteriormente o desenvolvimento de uma intervenção urbana. Registrada em vídeo, junto com a pesquisa (entrevistas, contextos, etc) a intervenção foi editada com outras ações sobre o tema Controle que foram desenvolvidas em São Paulo e outras cidades como Rio de Janeiro e Medellín, pelo artista Daniel Lima e os coletivos envolvidos no projeto. A parte musical aconteceu através da participação do músico de NY Mat Muntz que, junto com a equipe brasiliera, desenvolveram um repertório musical (entre as tradições brasileiras e norte americanas) para dialogar com o vídeo. "The inevitable question is: will black people be able to preserve Harlem? If during the last 100 years they were constantly being pushed to the north, driven from less desirable areas, will they be able to maintain this privileged section of Manhattan Island? It is unlikely that black people will preserve Harlem indefinitely, but, when they are forced to abandon it, it will not be for the same reasons that forced them to leave their former strongholds in New York city. The situation is quite another, and unprecedented. When people of color actually leave the neighborhood, their homes, their churches, their properties and their trades, it will be because the land will have become so valuable that they can no longer afford life in it. The date of a new change to the north, however, is still in the very distant future. "

Created by artist Daniel Lima, HARLEM: CULTURAL CAPITAL is an audiovisual construction project that equates urban intervention, video, music and performance. The project HARLEM: CULTURAL CAPITAL is centered in the research-action on gentrification of Harlem neighborhood in New York. With the participation of Eugênio Lima, Roberta Estrela D'Alva, Fernando Coster, Felipe Teixeira e Élida Lima, the project provides for a research-action process in NY City and the development of an urban intervention. Recorded on video, along with the research (interviews, contexts, etc.), the intervention will be edited with other actions about the gentrification subject that have been developed in São Paulo and other cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Berlin, by the artist Daniel Lima and the collectives involved in the project. The musical part happens through the participation of NY musicians who, together with Daniel Lima, develop a musical repertoire (between Brazilian and North American traditions) to dialogue with the video. Together, these elements make up the audiovisual presentation to be held in the celebration in the public space expected by Ideas City (29 May 2015). HARLEM: CULTURAL CAPITAL will approach the research-action around the gentrification process in Harlem that folds out into other conceptual fields that are part of the symbolism of the neighborhood. The idea and social resistance created around the idea os the ghetto goes back and owes much to the Harlem context in NY. The symbol of Harlem is also crossed by the idea of a cultural resistance like "the music of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker and Billie Holiday; the poetry of Langston Hughes and the narrative of Ralph Ellison, Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay and Richard Wright; jazz and bebop; the photos of James van der Zee and Jacob Lawrence's paintings". How is this history being reworked – or erased – by the power of the real estate capital? How can we find, built and enhance processes of resistance to this "steamroller"?
